Aug. 1-11 – Pacific Crest Music Fest in Dunsmuir

June 23, 2015

2015 PACIFIC CREST MUSIC FESTIVAL: PCM-photo4

The Pacific Crest Music Festival, located in the picturesque town of Dunsmuir, CA, is a highly intensive international music program in which hand selected students are invited to work, rehearse, and perform alongside the outstanding professional faculty.

PCMF is typically comprised of approximately 10 to 15 students artists, and a faculty of six to eight.  It is this incredible ratio that leads to an extremely personalized and individualized experience for each member.

During their stay, the young musicians will work in smaller chamber groups as well as performing in the PCMF Chamber Orchestra.  Each group consists of both student artists and faculty, providing every student artist with an opportunity to experience rehearsals and performances at a professional standard.

PERFORMANCES:

Dunsmuir Brewery Works: Thursday, 8/6/15 – 7pm

Come out and enjoy an incredible evening of dining and music at one of Dunsmuir’s favorite hangs.  Who knows what you’ll get!  Strolling violinists, traditional chamber music, or some improvisational folk fiddling.  You’ll have to join us to find out!

POPS Cultural Center: Friday, 8/7/15 – 7pm

Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens: Saturday, 8/8/15 – 6pmPCM-photo1

Our “Main Event”.  There is no more picturesque location for an outdoor summer concert than Dunsmuir’s iconic Botanical Gardens.  Bring a picnic and a blanket for the lawn, or enjoy from a chair in the seated area.  Either way, you will be viewing the final results of all of the hard work put in by PCMF members.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH:

Sunday, August 9th at 12:30 pm

Our young artists will work throughout the week in preparation for this event, and they will host/lead the activities.  Faculty will of course be there to assist and talk with interested parents:
12:30 – Arrivals/Introductions
1:00 – Short, informal performance by our students for our guests
1:30 – Break into smaller groups (2PCMF students w/ 5 local students) for a “Meet the Instruments” event, plus Q&A time
2:15 – Meet back as large group for final discussion
2:30 – Departures
From Michael Whitson of PCM:
“… And while our students are working with the local students,  faculty members will be talking with parents.  Explaining that music is definitely still an option for their children!!!  I’ve worked with many families in communities like Dunsmuir before and there are 2 very strong deterrents that are keeping music away from the young students.
1. Financial Objection – “I can’t afford violins or cellos…let alone the cost of music lessons”
2. Unable to find teacher – “I can’t drive all the way to Redding once a week for lessons”
I want to explain to the families that I have access here in LA to tons of extremely cheap, used, quality instruments.  And all a family needs for basic private lessons these days is a computer with Skype.  1/2 the lessons I teach nowadays are through Skype!!!  And I can work with families regarding the cost.  I understand that this won’t win everyone over, but if we can even get ONE LOCAL STUDENT started, I would consider that a huge success!
This event is for students of all ages (1st – 5th would be ideal), and they can have a decent music background, very little, or none at all.  In fact, I would love it if all students in attendance don’t even know what a viola or cello is!!!!

ALL EVENTS ARE FREE, AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!

Donations are, of course, appreciated.
