Water/Sewer/Garbage

Pure, untreated spring water is supplied by the city water department. Maximum pumping capacity 1.2 million gallons per day. Average daily consumption 0.4 million gallons.

Waste water disposal service is supplied by the City of Dunsmuir Waste Water Treatment Facility. Average flow into the sewer plant is 0.45 million gallons per day, less than half peak capacity. Service is billed through the city.

City contracts for weekly removal of solid waste and is billed through the city. Monthly water, sewer, and garbage service is economical and is billed through the city. Call (530) 235-4822.

Home heating is primarily wood, propane, and kerosene.

  • Dunsmuir has the City Council — City Manager form of government.
  • Law enforcement provided via contract with Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department.
  • Dunsmuir has a volunteer fire department with fire fighting and EMT services.
  • Fire insurance classification City 5; unincorporated areas 6-10.
  • Retail sales tax is 7.25%.

Labor & Employment

A labor market is available from Siskiyou and northern Shasta counties. The estimated population is approximately 45,000. The labor force is predominantly nonunion. Principle employers are Union Pacific Transportation Company, City of Dunsmuir, Dunsmuir Elementary School, Dunsmuir Joint Union High School, local merchants.

Industrial Development

There are no industrial sites in the city limits. The city owns 100 acres near Mott Airport, four miles north, and 13 acres, one mile south of town, that are available for development. Call the city for more information.

  • Hospital: Mercy Mount Shasta Medical Center, located in Mt. Shasta.
  • Education: Two elementary/junior high schools, one high school, one community college 17 miles north of Dunsmuir.
  • Cultural: Churches, library, weekly newspaper, city park (tennis courts, ball field, playground, botanical garden, community building), radio stations, cable television, two banks, museum, Castle Crags State Park, art galleries, historic railroad district, historic buildings, downtown children's park.
